Styling Your Newborn Baby Session
How I Prepare a Clean, Calm, and Custom Space for Your Little One
Welcoming a newborn is one of life’s most beautiful milestones, and capturing those first precious days is a joy I never take for granted. But behind every dreamy image is a thoughtfully prepared process designed to keep your baby safe, comfortable, and perfectly styled.
In this post, I want to share exactly what goes into styling and preparing for your newborn photography session, so you can feel confident and relaxed from the moment you walk through the door.
🌿 Cleanliness Is My First Priority
Before every newborn session, I carry out a thorough cleaning routine to create a hygienic and peaceful environment for your baby:
- All fabrics, wraps, blankets, and clothing are washed with baby-safe detergent.
- Props, baskets, and hard surfaces are sanitised and wiped down with non-toxic cleaners.
- My hands are washed regularly, and hand sanitiser is always close by during the session.
- If siblings or parents are included, I sanitise sitting areas and commonly touched props in between each session.
Cleanliness isn’t just about safety—it’s about giving you peace of mind during this delicate and special time.
✨ Ironed, Fluffed, and Ready to Go
No detail is too small when it comes to preparing the items your baby will wear or be posed in. I take time before your session to:
- Wash, Iron or steam wraps, outfits, and backdrops to ensure there are no wrinkles or creases in your final images.
- Carefully fluff and shape blankets and cushions to provide gentle support and texture.
- Lay out multiple coordinated options so we can flow smoothly from one setup to the next.
Everything is prepared before you arrive, so your baby can be settled quickly and comfortably.
🎨 Curating Colours and Themes Just for You
Every family is different—and every newborn session should reflect that. During our pre-session planning (via email or a quick phone call), I ask parents a few simple questions to help me tailor your session to your taste and vision:
- Do you prefer neutral, earthy tones or soft pastels and pops of colour?
- Are there any special heirlooms or cultural elements you'd like included?
- Is there a particular theme or style you’ve seen in my portfolio that you’re drawn to?
- What colours do you use in your nursery or home décor? This can help create images that look beautiful on your walls.
From there, I build a session style board that includes wraps, bonnets, headbands, tiny outfits, and coordinating backdrops that match your preferences.
📷 Equipment and Set-Up
Before your session begins, I have everything set up so your baby can be photographed in a warm, quiet space:
- Studio lights (or natural light modifiers) are pre-positioned for soft, flattering lighting.
- A white noise machine and space heater create a calm and cozy environment.
- My camera is set up and tested in manual mode, ensuring perfect exposure and focus on those tiny, perfect details.
All this prep work means that once we begin, I can focus entirely on your baby’s comfort and capturing the moments that matter most.
❤️ A Session Tailored to Your Baby
While I prepare a full plan and styling guide ahead of time, I always let your baby lead the way. If your little one is sleepy, we’ll start with soft, curled-up poses. If they're more alert, I’ll adjust to more wrapped or parent-focused shots that show off those beautiful eyes.
My approach is always baby-led, stress-free, and flexible, with breaks for feeding, cuddling, and soothing as needed.
Final Thoughts
A newborn session is more than just a photoshoot—it’s a chance to pause, reflect, and celebrate the new life you’ve welcomed. Through careful styling, thoughtful preparation, and a calm, clean environment, I create space for those magical first memories to unfold naturally.
